Dear Plies,
Are you aware that children as young as 12 are singing your lyrics in the hallways of our middle schools? It’s all over the internet and radio, the song is readily accessible to anyone of any age. Kids are no longer kids in this day and age (and no one is blaming you for this), and lyrics like those found in “Becky” do more harm than good to their emotional well beings.
I am a counselor in the school system, and I work with children and adolescents from poverty-stricken neighborhoods. The majority of my clients are from broken homes, and music is, at times, their outlet for dealing with their tumultuous upbringing. For a 11/12 year old (and younger) to listen to these lyrics before they are cognitively ready to synthesize and understand them can be catastrophic. In many cases, you might be their only role model as everyone else in their lives has neglected them to the point of abuse.
I don’t want to trample on your first amendment rights, but please think about who might be listening to your music before you produce and distribute it.
