African American men and women I charge you to find out who you are. There is nothing wrong with supporting an artist like Plies, matter of fact, I urge you to do so because it is assisting a young man in changing his “situation.” However, realize what and whom you are supporting.
Women please note that if you are participating in the “Bust it Baby” reality show, you are participating in your own degradation. If you are purchasing the CDS, you are supporting and participating in your own degradation. African American women you are so much more than “Bust It Babies,” “Shawtys,” “Wet-Wets,” and “Pretty Pussys.” You are more than your physical attributes, what you can do in the bedroom, and what’s between your legs. Don’t be reduced to merely sexual objects and don’t support someone who reduces you to such.
African American men, who have the world on their shoulders, you are so much more than “Goons,” “Thugs,” and “Gangsters.” I understand your situation, but know that this does not have to continue to be your situation. You can become anything you want to become, however, it is going to be difficult, but you can do it.
Furthermore, in regards to the “Bust It Baby” reality show, Plies states that “this is apart of what we do.” I assume the latter provides justification for him creating and bringing the show to national television. However, I charge you to think Mr. Washington, just because it comes along with what you are apart of: Do you have to contribute to the degradation and humiliation of your own people?
Lastly, know that you hold the power, you are the consumers. You have the power to construct change in the music industry. Challenge these artists on what they do and what they say. If you want to see a change and you want to hear something different, don’t support the artist. Don’t buy the CDS, don’t attend the concerts, and don’t buy the merchandise. In the end they will be forced to give you something different.

Plies I am your #1 fan straight out of the CHI and I want to thank you for that song 1 Day because I just lost one of my best friends a couple of weeks ago and when I put that song on it just really explains how I feel. The day of her funeral I played it ALL day. I just kept replaying it every time it went off and cried. That’s one of the reasons that I love you so much because you have the type of music that people can relate to regardless of what area or lifestyle you come from there’s something for everyone. I listen to that song 1 Day everyday and it helps me to get through all the pain that I am feeling. Same goes for 100 years cuz I have a brother that is locked up and isn’t coming home anytime soon.
